AT&T Launches First Telco VoIP Powered Triple Play Bundle

AT&T announced the launch of AT&T U-verse Voice, a VoIP powered primary line service for their U-Verse triple play bundle. The service was launched formally today in the Detroit market after trials began in December. The voice service is priced at $40/month for unlimited calling or $20/month for 1,000 long distance minutes, or can be bundled for lesser rates. By using VoIP, AT&T is integrating several convergence features into their triple play package, including an online call manager portal, unified messaging, click to call from the TV, and the simultaneous ring of up to four separate telephone numbers. This is an interesting development on a couple of fronts. One is the positioning of this voice product, which clearly is designed to ... Read More

HBO Launches Internet Video Downloads

HBO is joining the long list of media companies entering the Internet video download space. The service will be branded HBO Broadband, and will test launch in Green Bay, WI. The service will not be direct marketed to subscribers. Rather, it will be marketed through cable/IPTV operators, as a part of an existing programming subscription or for additional fees. This approach is somewhat similar to how ESPN markets ESPN 360. HBO Broadband is only for PC viewing, at least initially, ... Read More

VoIP Patent Suits Continue: Cox’s Turn

Patent lawsuits have long been used as a competitive weapon in many industries. Telecom is now getting their fair share. Vonage suffered a series of patent lawsuits from competitors last year, and now Verizon is suing Cox Communications on similar grounds. Four of the same patents, which focus on technology used to complete IP calls, used as a suit basis against Vonage are also the focus of the Verizon suit against Cox. Verizon filed suit in the Eastern District Court of Virginia on January 11 alleging that Cox infringed on a total of eight patents. Light Reading speculates that this patent suit may be a sign of things to come, as most cable companies using VoIP, use the same technology that Verizon names in the Cox patent suit. Verizon may be teeing up the suit with Cox to see ... Read More

XO Abandons Minute Based Pricing for Telephony

XO says minutes and lines no longer matter for telephony services. They have launched pricing for telecom services based solely on bandwidth. XO argues, rightfully so, that voice service is no different than any other application riding their IP backbone. Instead of charging customers on a per line basis and charging for traffic by the minute, XO’s new XO IPfolio product suite will charge for bandwidth tiers, which range from 1.5 Mbps to 45 Mbps. Customers can then select the number of telephony lines they want, based on bandwidth capacity. The XO IPfolio includes the following products: XO IP Flex, XO SIP, XO One iPBX, XO MPLS IP-VPN. The new pricing paradigm ... Read More
